Did you know that San Antonio is the only major city in the state of Texas without a free public inclusive playground? Well, that is about to change with a new play area coming to Stone Oak.

Mitchell’s Landing, a project partnership with the city’s park system and The Mitchell Chang Foundation, is a family-friendly playground that will honor the memory of Mitchell Chang, a 3-year-old boy who tragically drowned in February 2018 at a local swim school.

We spoke to Mitchell’s mother, April Chang, who shared details about the new development and what visitors can expect.

Where will Mitchell’s Landing be located?

The playground will be a part of the massive 204-acre Classen-Steubing Ranch Park located at 20000 block of Hardy Oak Pkwy. (Think: softball + soccer fields, an education center, hiking, and bike trails). The development is set to open in the summer while the playground is set to open later on in the fall.

What will the playground feature?

The area will be a little less than an acre and will feature a pirate-themed play area (Mitchell’s loved all-things pirates) with inclusive activities like:

An interactive scavenger hunt game
Sensory dome
In-ground bouncer
H-E-B Mermaid Lagoon climbing rocks with tunnels large enough for assistive mobility devices

“One of my friends, Vanessa V., uses a mobility device and the H-E-B rock tunnels were her favorite part because of the unique experience and continued inclusion in play.”

April hopes this new playground will bring joy to families in the Alamo City. Until then, you can support the Mitchell Chang Foundation and its mission by visiting their website.

While gas prices continue to rise across the country, San Antonio reached an all-time high yesterday of $3.96 a gallon for regular unleaded. Announced

VIA Metropolitan Transit has announced it’s Fiesta schedule for the numerous events held across the 10-day celebration. The Fiesta Park + Ride fare is $2.50 each way and will include other discounts and promotions for major events like Taste of New Orleans, Oyster Bake + more. 🎉

Development

The $600 million Lone Star Brewery project owned by GrayStreet Partners is up for sale again. There have been multiple attempts to revitalize the area south of downtown, but there has yet to be an official ground breaking. Last year, the City Council approved as much as $24 million in incentives to help with this 32-acre development. 🚧 (San Antonio Business Journal)

Last week, we shared a News Note about local Ukrainian-owned bakery Laika Cheesecakes & Espresso’s call for help to raise money for Ukraine. They provided an update stating that with the help of the SA community the bakery raised $100,000+. 🇺🇦

Coming Soon

Dutch Bros is planning to open a new location near UTSA soon. According to MySA, construction is set to begin sometime in August and hopefully be completed in early 2023. Currently, the coffee-chain has a total of eight locations (open + in construction) in the Alamo City. ☕ (MySA)

Community

San Antonio Parks and Recreation will host informational sessions for its Summer Youth Program happening June-August. Parents will learn about the online registration system, verify income for a reduced fee + get an overview of activities offered during the summer. ☀️
